- Description
- Although ASEAN's economy and population have steadily grown, the state of consumer protection differs across ASEAN member countries. Different PESTLE (political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental) factors have affected the legal frameworks and institutional arrangements of consumer protection in ASEAN member countries; whereas regional and international trade agreements have also affected consumers in terms of price, quality and standards. Hence, consumer protection is placed at the top of the priority list of the ASESAN Economic Community's agenda as consumer protection is essential to the economic and democratic development of ASEAN as a single market. This papers aims to (i) examine the current legal framework and institutions involving in consumer protection in ASEAN member countries, and (ii) investigate the challenges faced by ASEAN member countries in the development of a regional consumer protection framework in the context of ASEAN as a single market.
